Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, located at 5555 W. Thunderbird Road in Glendale, is one of Banner Health’s select hospitals to open makeshift grocery stores for frontline staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.
These grocery stores provide much-needed service as many Banner Health employees are currently working longer than normal and may not have time to shop for essentials they may need at home.
“We’re proud to do our part to deliver this important service to our doctors and clinical staff,” said Tracy Baskara, director of food and nutrition at Banner Ironwood Medical Center in Queen Creek, in a press release. “The fact that our colleagues take care of patients, save lives and work long hours during this time has inspired us to help them and their families at home.”
Banner employees can purchase healthy staple foods such as fruit, vegetables, bread, dairy products and eggs at a discounted price. In addition, the culinary staff at these hospitals prepare prepackaged take-away meals for a family of four, including heating instructions.
“We hope this is a strain on our colleagues and their families to bear in their extremely busy lives,” said Sandy Allen, director of culinary and environmental services at Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix. “We are a family here, and if we can make life easier for our patients, we can make life a little easier for our staff in these uncertain times.”
The Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa offers a slightly different format of food – grocery baskets that employees can purchase that contain essential items like milk, bread, eggs, and other protein items.
