Packaging converters are leading the way in corrugated digital printing capacity with an additional multi-million dollar investment
PALO ALTO, Calif., And ATLANTA, Jan. 27, 2021 – Georgia-Pacific, a leading US provider of integrated packaging solutions, today announced the expansion of its Hummingbird® digital printing solutions with the purchase of an HP PageWide T1190 Press, the world’s highest – volume digital corrugated packaging solution1.
To expand the reach of digital services in the US, the new 110-inch wide web press for corrugated printing production will be installed at a new Hummingbird location in Arizona later this year. The HP T1190 is the converter’s third inkjet web press, installed since 2015, when digital printing services started with the HP T400S press and then a 110-inch T1100 press was used.
Georgia-Pacific’s Hummingbird provides a variety of digitally printed corrugated packaging solutions for consumer products, electronics, and food and beverage brands across North America. Hummingbird’s digital offering includes corrugated shelf packaging (SRP), food trays, large format cardboard boxes, e-commerce solutions and volume displays (POP).
“Our brand and trade conversion partners can now reduce their inventory of printed packaging, reduce turnaround time, make frequent design changes and offer more graphic versions,” said Robert Seay, vice president of digital printing solutions for Georgia-Pacific. “With our continued investments and network in 30 states, we have unprecedented digital printing capacity with a national printing base to provide efficiency and redundancy that can transform the corrugated supply chain for brands across North America.”
According to Smithers market analysis, the global volume of inkjet corrugated packaging increased more than 20% in 2020 compared to 2019, even amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“Georgia-Pacific continues to invest in Hummingbird digital print positions to improve brand supply chain efficiency through easier inventory management and faster turnaround,” said Carles Farre, vice president and general manager, HP PageWide Industrial. “HP corrugated digital printing solutions are gaining traction around the world as the number of customer installations accelerates. This enables converters to run digital operating models based on fast time to market and sustainability benefits. “
The highly productive HP PreWide T1190 digital prepress press is a six-color inkjet (CMYKOV) press with a web width of 2.8 meters (110 inches) that efficiently adapts to corrugated board capacity, offering offset print quality, unmatched digital speed and economy and flexibility. The press uses real HP A30 water-based inks.
With the HP PageWide T1190’s industry-leading throughput of up to 300 meters per minute of corrugated cardboard, it can deliver up to 100 million corrugated boxes per year.
