LOCAL ENTREPRENEUR: Sharon Monnot, Owner, Sports Ink Screen Printing & Embroidery

MANISTEE NEWS ADVOCATE: How long have you owned your business?

SHARON MONNOT: I started doing this in 2003. It’s hard to believe that it will be 18 years in May.

MNA: What inspired you to start your business?

MONNOT: I found Manistee, who needed another screen printing company, and found myself without a job. It was a win-win situation!

I owned a boat and figured if I could sell the boat I would have the money to get started. If you didn’t know, within two weeks it was sold. I think it should be like that!

MNA: What makes Manistee a great place to own a business?

MONNOT: That’s easy – the people! Everyone supports local and family run businesses so much. There are so many ways people can shop.

We all owe the internet shopping shopping but when it comes down to it, you can’t beat the personal interaction and care of your local business owners. Where else can you share your stories or talk about the children or even cry over a stressful situation? You can’t do that on the internet, but you can here because we care. Our customers also take care of us.

MNA: How is your company doing in the local community?

MONNOT: We have been members of the Manistee Chamber of Commerce since I started the company. We try to get involved in events and give back as much as possible. Personally, I was involved in various organizations and through this commitment I made many new friends.

We always try to find out what’s going on by putting messages on our sign. I’m just glad Sports Ink has something to give back. We are very blessed to be part of this community.

MNA: What are some of your personal interests and hobbies?

MONNOT: Spending time with family is the best. It was very special when we all went to see my son in California. Such great memories! Learning new games with your grandchildren is always interesting, especially chess with my grandson Lorenzo, but that’s another story.

Oh, and what would the year be without the Maxwelltown Pub Crawl. What fun!

MNA: Which local companies you work with will make your business a success?

MONNOT: The Chamber is so supportive and keeps us informed. I really try to work with all companies. They send clients my way and we send clients their way. We’re all in the same boat, so we try to support each other and keep the dollars local.

MNA: What are your favorite local stores?

MONNOT: I would come back with: “Which local shop is not my favorite?” I really can’t pick a favorite. Every company has its own character and I’m just happy to be a part of it.

MNA: Other thoughts?

MONNOT: The last year was very exhausting for every company. I doubt there is any of us who could say we have no problems. But we try and we have a great community that supports us as much as possible. This too will pass!

Sports Ink and my daughter Lynn’s business, Lucky Lizard Awards and Gifts, appreciate everyone who walks through our doors. So come on and we’ll get through this pandemic together!

We are a family company. Not only is Lynn under the same roof, I love it when grandchildren Lorenzo and Isabella come in to help and they have fun here too. They have some very interesting opinions, for sure. When Isabella was around 2 years old, she enjoyed firing everyone, including me. I’m glad she outgrew this phase.
