Mid America Display, the custom product display and signage division of corrugated packaging supplier Boxes, Inc. of St. Louis, is expanding its leading supply chain for digital production packaging and display graphics with the purchase of a second ultra-high-speed EFI Nozomi C18000 single-pass inkjet digital printer with direct Involvement; EFI MarketDirect PackCentral software; and an EFI VUTEk superwide format printer from Electronics For Imaging, Inc. When the new single pass solution is installed later this month, Mid America Display will be the first in the world to operate two Nozomi C18000 printers in a single facility.
The company will unveil its second ultra-high-speed, single-pass corrugated printer during an open house on December 4th.
The 71 inch wide Nozomi C18000 LED inkjet is a groundbreaking production device that has won multiple industry awards for its high quality, efficiency and productivity. According to Mike Patton, CEO of Mid America Display and Boxes, Inc., it will bring more digital capacity and redundancy to the company’s offerings and meet growing demand across all market segments.
The company chose the EFI single pass solution because of the overwhelming success it had with its first printer.

Driven to Xceed with advanced digital solutions
In addition to its two existing businesses – Boxes Inc. for packaging production and Mid America Display – the company is launching Xceed, a print-on-demand e-commerce business for corrugated cardboard production, and Xceed Pro, a solution specifically developed for brands Agencies that need more comprehensive online package ordering capabilities. The two additional EFI Mid America Display products, recently added prior to the second installation of the Nozomi C18000 printer – EFI’s MarketDirect PackCentral web-to-pack software and a hybrid flatbed / roll-to-roll LED inkjet printer EFI VUTEk GS3250lx Pro – will support when starting Xceed Pro.
The company’s new VUTEk printer is a 126-inch wide LED inkjet solution that prints eight colors plus white in production mode at speeds of up to 22 cards per hour.
MarketDirect PackCentral, which offers a streamlined, full-featured, online design, is the backbone of Xceed Pro’s web-to-pack ordering capabilities, creating an end-to-end workflow from online order submission to an EFI Fiery Digital Front End (DFE) to the Nozomi printer. “PackCentral is a complete package for our e-commerce branch that offers multiple benefits,” said Tim Korte, chief information officer of Boxes, Inc. and Mid America Display. “With it, our customers can upload their own print-ready files and immediately receive a price so that they can place their order online. The new Nozomi C18000 printer that will be installed represents a dramatic increase in the robust manufacturing capabilities of Mid America Display, giving the company the ability to meet virtually any corrugated packaging and display supply chain need with one solution that is sustainable and efficient and eliminates the often significant waste of production repairs and obsolescence associated with analogue litholamination-based packaging supply chain operations. The Nozomi C18000 printer operates at a speed of up to 75 linear meters per minute – this corresponds to up to 10,000 890 x 890 mm (35 x 35 inch) plates per hour – and is the choice of leading corrugated cardboard manufacturers worldwide. The single pass piezo inkjet imaging system delivers precise, high-fidelity color, including superb, consistent rendition on solid surfaces.
Both Nozomi C18000 printers from Mid America Display have a six-color (CMYK, orange and violet) and white configuration of original EFI inks for high-quality images with an extended color gamut and matt, satin or glossy surfaces. The printers’ highly productive, rugged industrial head architecture eliminates the downtime associated with replacing consumable printheads.
