Digital printing technology is revolutionizing the entire book publishing supply chain, and self-publishing is thriving as a result. According to Nielsen BookData (the respected source of comprehensive international book records), the 2017 market share for self-published and indie-published books outpaced major publishers, making the relocation a world first.
One South African company taking advantage of this trend is Groep 7 Drukkers, which recently secured a Xerox Color C75 to print high quality, graphically enhanced book covers for self-publishing customers. This purchase was made by Compleo, Xerox Platinum Business Partner and Altron Bytes Document Solutions (BDS).
BDS is the largest Xerox distributor in the world and offers the full range of document equipment, software solutions and services to 26 countries south of the Sahara.
Groep 7 Drukkers was founded in 1996 by Jaco and Ilette Strydom and originally started as a general printing company. Since 2008, it has gradually evolved into a one-stop, self-publishing digital printing service delivering high-quality books, textbooks and training materials and run by a highly qualified, all-female production team.
“According to industry experts, the trend towards self-publication is not subsiding anytime soon and the number of self-published books is expected to increase even further,” says Ilette Strydom of Groep 7 Drukkers. “We have built a reputation for excellence and passion in this industry. To increase our capacity, we chose the C75. This is a large production press with a small footprint, which is important as we are a niche business with a small lead workforce. The press has enabled us to produce the most demanding print jobs, but it is easy and inexpensive to do. “
Research has shown that more and more authors are finding the courage to publish themselves. Printing companies are dedicated to building niche markets. Groep 7 Drukkers is one of those forward-looking organizations that offers independent writers the unique opportunity to focus on specialty markets and target groups.
The Xerox Color C75 is a high performance multifunction printer best suited for graphics, pay-for-print, and commercial printing environments. “It prints with incredible color control at a resolution of up to 2,400 x 2,400 dpi,” says Chris Stoltz, Compleo’s sales manager. “This makes it the ideal press for a company that makes high impact products like book covers.
The company also uses a Xerox D125 to print and assemble book pages, and a perfect folder for creating professionally bound and trimmed books of 20 to 400 pages. Together with the D125, it has given Groep 7 Printers the quality, speed, flexibility and affordability necessary to run a world class book publisher. “
With Groep 7 Drukkers, customers can use print-on-demand letterpress printing to select quantities according to their needs and print according to their budget. And of course the turnaround time is fast and the quality is world class.
The C75 offers extremely accurate alignment, registration and high resolution image resolution. The SIQA toolset (Simple Image Quality Adjustment) enables these automated controls and guarantees the strictest standards.
“Compleo’s maintenance and support services are excellent,” says Strydom. “We have a personalized, consistent relationship with the company, which in turn enables us to deliver on our brand promise to our customers.”
