STILLWATER, MN – 2020 was a turbulent year for everyone, including the food industry. United Natural Foods, Inc.’s (UNFI) CUB® banner had to close the doors of its Lake Street store in Minneapolis, Minnesota due to significant damage caused by the unrest in the area. However, CUB has announced that the site is now back up and running and has some new functions and expanded selection that will make buyers cheer.
“From the moment we had to close the Lake Street location, we knew we were not only going to rebuild, but to rebuild, to create a business that better the neighborhood it is in “said Mike Stigers, CEO. “Of the larger selection of fresh productsOur new store on Lake Street is one the community can pride itself on every day as you bring meat and seafood to the innovative areas that meet your neighborhood grocer’s expectations. The reopening of the Lake Street store is made possible with the support of the Jerry’s Foods team, the store’s franchisee. We thank them for their continued commitment to the local community. “
The refurbished store now offers expanded areas of expertise as well as new features that were contributed and developed based on suggestions from the local community, according to a press release.
Some of the new installations include:
- Expanded product department with a larger range of organic products and a larger selection of fresh fruit and vegetables
- Expanded deli area with more convenient Quick & Easy Meals solutions such as sandwiches, salads and sushi; a wider variety of hot dishes; a new soup and salad bar with more variety; and a wider range of fresh meat and cheese specialties

In addition to the expanded offerings, the CUB location will include new amenities to meet customer needs. In addition to a dollar store section, the Lake Street store is now offered Collection and delivery of groceriesas well as a barrier-free pharmacy with prescription delivery.
The reopening of the site marks the closure of the CUB Community Market, a 13,000-square-foot temporary structure set up in the Lake Street store parking lot in early July 2020 to continue serving the community’s food needs.
The CUB Community Market Store offered essential items such as fresh produce and best-selling groceries in traditional CUB stores. The opening allowed CUB to employ around 40 people while renovations were being carried out at the Lake Street location.
“The local grocery store is the last to close in an emergency and the first to open, and that’s exactly what we showed our customers at the CUB Community Market,” said Stigers. “I’m proud of the entire CUB team that rolled up their sleeves and found solutions to meet the needs of our neighbors, family members and friends while our Lake Street store was under construction.”
