With many in the industry affected by the events of 2020, many are back on their feet as 2021 opens up new perspectives. United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) is one of those industry players to share some positive news. The retailer’s banner, CUB®, had to close its Lake Street store in Minneapolis, Minnesota due to significant damage caused by the unrest in the area. However, CUB recently announced that the site is now back up and running and has some new functions and expanded selection that will cheer buyers.

The reopening of the Lake Street store is made possible thanks to the support of the Jerry’s Foods team, the store’s franchisee. We thank them for their continued commitment to the local community. “
According to a press release, CUB’s newly renovated business now offers expanded specialty areas as well as new features that have been contributed and developed based on suggestions from the local community.
Some of the new installations include:
- Expanded deli area with more convenient Quick & Easy Meals solutions such as sandwiches, salads and sushi; a wider variety of hot dishes; a new soup and salad bar with more variety; and a wider range of fresh meat and cheese specialties
- A new meat and seafood department
- A global grocery market with a wide range of stocks and beverages from the Mediterranean, Caribbean, East Africa and Spain
- A freshly prepared tortillas station with tortillas that are made in-house every day
- A popcorn shop with fresh popcorn in different sizes and flavors
- A custom cake decoration station
In addition to the expanded offerings, the CUB location will include new amenities to meet customer needs. In addition to a dollar store section, the Lake Street store is now offered Collection and delivery of groceriesand a barrier-free pharmacy with prescription delivery.
The reopening of this location marks the closure of the CUB Community Market, a 13,000-square-foot temporary structure set up in the Lake Street store parking lot in early July 2020 to continue serving the community’s food needs. The CUB Community Market Store featured essential items such as meat, dairy products, and best-selling groceries that can be found in traditional CUB stores. The opening allowed CUB to employ around 40 people while renovations were being carried out at the Lake Street site.
“The local grocery store is the last to close in an emergency and the first to open, and that’s exactly what we showed our customers at the CUB Community Market,” said Stigers. “I’m proud of the entire CUB team that rolled up their sleeves and found solutions to meet the needs of our neighbors, family members and friends while our Lake Street store was under construction.”
