Williams Printing Builds New Facility Round Full Fleet of Heidelberg Merchandise

Williams Printing (WPI) was forced to leave its old location and recently built a brand new 20,000 square foot facility in Rural Hall, NC. Instead of relocating its older equipment, the company decided it was time to upgrade its existing production portfolio as well. WPI chose Heidelberg as the main supplier for everything from prepress to the printing press to the post press and installed a new Suprasetter CtP, Prinect Production Manager, a Speedmaster CX 75-5 + L with Saphira Consumables, a Versafire EP as well as a POLAR jogger and stacker.

Driving a high speed sports car

A commercial printer based outside of Greensboro, NC, WPI prides itself on being “really good at doing the things other people aren’t doing well.” With a strong focus on quality and customer service, the company achieves above-average throughput times thanks to its smaller, agile team. According to owner Kevin Williams, we can easily produce 250,000 full-color brochures that fold and shrink in 2-3 days, compared to larger companies that can take 2-3 days to get a quote.

A big part of the ability to achieve these quick turns is WPI’s recent investments in brand new Heidelberg technology across all business areas. In prepress, the company installed a Suprasetter 106 CtP together with the Prinect Production Manager workflow. The workflow upgrade makes it faster than ever to transfer files from prepress to the company’s new Speedmaster CX 75. With the advanced technology of the CX 75, WPI completes manufacturing in under 20 minutes, unlike its older press which would take up to 60 minutes to prepare a job for a full production run. “It’s like riding a 10-speed bike every day and now we have a high-speed sports car,” said Williams.

WPI not only saw a dramatic increase in overall productivity, but also a significant improvement in print quality. According to Williams, “If we do a long job in the press, I’m confident that 10,000 or 20,000 sheets in the shipment can pull a sheet out of the shipment and it will look exactly like the first sheet that was produced.” WPI’s decision to operate the printing press exclusively with Heidelberg Saphira Consumables, which includes everything from ink and blankets to plates and fountain solutions, contributes to the consistent print quality. For Williams, the use of Saphira Consumables was based on two criteria: that the press would produce an optimal quality and that the prices of consumables would be competitive with those of other manufacturers. “I assumed I would pay higher prices because it said ‘Heidelberg’ on the products, but I couldn’t be more wrong,” said Williams. Not only is the company satisfied with the price of its press supplies, but they are also impressed with the consistency the products achieve in the press every day.

Superior customer support

Due to its shorter runs, WPI also decided to invest in Heidelberg with a new Versafire EP. After using other digital manufacturers for over 10 years, Williams grew tired of their quality and service. He decided to move to Heidelberg after speaking to other printers who run Versafires. The Versafire installed just over 6 months ago exceeds WPI’s expectations in terms of productivity, quality and user-friendliness of the machine, which also uses the Prinect Digital Front End for simpler and simpler impositions.

Williams was also impressed with the technical support he received from Heidelberg for the Versafire. “The support was an important factor in our decision to switch everything to Heidelberg. The ability to call someone and get a direct answer or know someone is tracking down an answer instead of getting the bypass is invaluable to any business owner. “

A change in mindset

Despite its recent “Heidelberg heavy” investments, WPI has not always been an enthusiastic supporter of Heidelberg. After poor experience with buying a cutter in the early 2000s, Williams lost confidence in Heidelberg’s overall vision. Over the years, Williams learned about the new technology and better service coverage from Heidelberg through discussions with the Heidelberg team and its customers. Now that he has been running his new products for over six months, he couldn’t be more satisfied with his decision: “These investments have completely changed my attitude towards Heidelberg, and I will only buy them in the future.”
